Progress monitoring is such a powerful tool to gauge student understanding of instruction. It should drive our lesson plans and instruction as well as goals.

Baseline data

First, baselining students at the beginning of the year helps teachers understand where the students currently are. It provides a baseline for the progression of learning for the year.

Baseline data allows teachers to improve their instruction. It guides the student’s progress and performance along with interventions.

Knowing where the students begin also allows students to have ownership and help monitor their learning goals.

Next, in my classroom, I actually have the students help fill out their graphs. This shows their success of the goals that we have in place for them. Moreover, documenting their own progress is a powerful tool and helps them have higher expectations of themselves.

Progress monitoring is gathered with any cognitive level

No matter the cognitive ability students love to see success. Confidence is built by the students. Therefore, students are willing to try more difficult and challenging things. They are also willing to achieve their academic and social goals that are in place.

Monitor frequently

By knowing what progress monitoring is, it allows teachers to reflect and communicate with the service providers. It also allows parents to know what is working and what isn’t.

Having a system in place for progress monitoring will help you own the year. It will help you be confident in your instructional approaches and when writing IEPs.
